[Smile (2022)] Horror Movie Review - Spoiler Alert

Because it was Halloween season, many horror movies were released in theaters. Following the review of [Orphan: Birth of an Angel] I posted the other day, I am going to review [Smile] this time. Smile was extensively marketed even before its release, and the process leading up to its release as such a large film is also exciting. First, for those of you who haven't checked, read the previous [Orphan: First Kill(2022)] Review.

A movie based on a true story?

There is always an issue that comes up when a horror movie is released. That's because the movie is based on a true story. Was [Smile] really based on a true story? Check out the article below.

Seriously, let's start with the disadvantages

Horror films with female characters as the main characters are mostly narratives about self-growth. The development of this movie was predictable to a certain extent because it is also a story of one's own growth through overcoming trauma.

Also, in the second half, too much of it depended on computer graphics, so immersion was broken. Personally, I feel that movies based on modern ghost stories like these Japanese horror film series [Ju-on] or [Incantation], which was recently released on Netflix, have less computer graphics and more realistic parts, making them more immersive.

That's why I don't think this movie is a very immersive movie for viewers who don't like the kind of movie like [It], which has a lot of computer graphics. Also, it contains quite a few gory elements and can be a trigger for self-harm and suicide trauma, so it is highly discouraged for those who are struggling with trauma related to it.

However, in the end, it is a story of growth

As mentioned before, because the film is ultimately about the protagonist's growth, I was able to relate to the hopeful image of the protagonist, who acknowledges and overcomes his trauma. Until the middle, this part forms the main part of the story, so you will be able to enjoy the movie on various emotional lines.

Also, as a movie fan who wants a female narrative, the fact that a horror movie in which women take the lead has been released and has been marketed to such an extent was in itself energizing for me. Earlier, I talked about the reason to protect the movie, but if you are a viewer who likes the same kind of movie as the previous [Happy Death Day], you will be able to watch this movie interestingly by focusing on the individual growth of the main character and overcoming obstacles.
